State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz has been pushing for more access to adoption records for years. Herself an adoptee, Feigenholtz is frustrated that Illinois currently allows access to only the amended birth certificates with adoption parents listed, not the original birth parents.
“I think there is a lot of confusion as to why that information and right has been withheld,” Feigenholtz said. “There are growing numbers of people, including adopted parents, that realize this is an injustice and an unnecessary omission.
Others think making public access to orginal birth information could be devastating to those who've hidden the fact they've given up a child for adoption in their past, and fear such access might encourage an awkward situation to end in abortion, rather than adoption.
What do you think? Should Illinois' adoptees' birth records be kept secret or not?
