Good to see the Southtown Star getting the point -- that Illinois should be the 42nd state without gas taxes . . .
Regardless, Illinois should not be balancing the books on the backs of folks who already are seeing their dollars buy less and less. As usual, the ones most hurt by it are those who can least afford it - the working poor and the middle-class.
We might also point out, if we have to make do with less, shouldn't the General Assembly? The Southland is particularly hard hit by the pump prices because there are fewer jobs to be had here than in the northern and western suburbs. That means more people are commuting out of the area, the commute is longer and mass transit - at least from south to the north or northwest - is not much of an option.
If folks can't get to work, they don't have money for little things like mortgages, food and phone bills, which makes the economy that much worse.
