Today's Southtown Star "Always Right" column explains how I got involved in politics. I'm always surprised when people don't know my story (as mundane as it is.) For you who don't know, it wasn't studying poli sci, it wasn't being in College Republicans that pulled me in. It was when the wolf came to our homeschool door ...
That was when our family first stuck its collective toe into politics. We learned that legislation requiring our religion-based homeschool curriculum to be approved by the local public school principal was about to be introduced to the General Assembly. We needed to know where our state representative and senator stood on the issue.
So, as a school project, we found out who our district's lawmakers were, and we set out to defend our right to homeschool our children as we chose, as did hundreds of other families teaching their children at home.
We began calling our lawmakers' district offices, meeting with them personally and inviting them to visit our support group meetings. Those who committed to protecting our homeschooling freedoms began inviting us to volunteer in their campaigns. Before we knew it, our children were comfortable knocking on doors, right alongside us. We were nurturing little political activists in the afternoon while teaching them math, reading and history earlier in the day.
