Yesterday President Barack Obama appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. When Stewart asked the president why his party appeared to be having so much trouble in this election, Obama said, "We've gone through two of the toughest years of any time since the Great Depression."
This is not the first time that the president has indulged himself in such childish hyperbole. Does he really think that 2009 and 2010 have been tougher for America than the first two full years of our fight in World War II in 1942 and 1943? Or tougher than what President Harry Truman faced in the first two years of the Korean War in 1950 and 1951? Or tougher than what President Johnson faced in the revolutionary year of 1968? Does he really believe his own stated fantasies or is he simply so vain that he thinks American history started 22 months ago with his Inauguration?
In his imagination and that of his fellow socialist cult members, he is the secular savior who was going to transform America in fundamental ways and if ordinary Americans are too dumb to appreciate all he has done for them, then that alone must explain why his party is struggling for respect. The irony of this delusional view is that the Left used to say all the time that President George W. Bush was the one who was too stubborn to admit his mistakes.
Just about the only mistake we have ever heard President Obama admit to this fall is that he did not do a good enough job of making Americans understand why they should be grateful to him for his many under-appreciated heroic accomplishments. Yup, that was a big mistake all right and one that will cost his party the total domination they have had over two of the three branches of federal government since January 20, 2009.
In my opinion the main reason President Obama is having such a hard time selling his message is that he constantly whines about the hand he was dealt and about how President Bush left him with a mess and that is partly correct. But what has President Obama done to make the mess better? Did he help economic recovery and job creation by plunging the nation another trillion dollars in debt? If you are in a deep hole Mr. President, the sensible thing to do is stop digging it deeper.
