A popular novelty song recorded by Patti Page in 1952 poses the question, “(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?”
But there are other important questions consumers should ask, too, including: “Has that doggie been vaccinated?” “What breed is that doggie?” “What is that doggie’s health history?”
Once they’ve been smitten by “the one with the waggly tail,” however, chances are it’s too late for pet buyers to think rationally. Thanks to a state law that went into effect Jan. 1, they won’t have to; (emphasis added) pet stores are now required to disclose pertinent information about dogs and cats.
“We want prospective pet consumers to have information at their fingertips so they can make an informed decision before they take that cat or dog home to their family,” said Januari Smith, communication manager with the Illinois Department of Agriculture, which is responsible for enforcing the new law.
