Springfield, IL. – Jim and Charlie Rakers (middle and right) brought a 125 pound roasted pig to the State Capitol June 22 for a news conference called by State Sen. Kyle McCarter (left) to draw attention to state government’s never-ending desire for more and more tax dollars.
“State government is like a pig at feeding time. The more you feed it, with our tax dollars, the more it wants,” McCarter told reporters. “After years of overspending, what was the Governor’s and Democrat-led General Assembly’s answer? Passing a 67 percent hike in the state income tax in January on individuals and a 45 percent hike in the state income tax on businesses…State government is never quite satisfied; never quite gets enough of our hard-earned tax dollars.”
Jim of Aviston and Charlie of Trenton purchased the animal and had it processed at Trenton Processing Center.
“I appreciate the efforts of my good friends Jim and Charlie,” said McCarter. “It was a great gesture on their part to not only order the pig; they also picked it up and brought it to the Capitol.”
The pig did not go to waste. The Rakers and the Senator carved it up and served pork sandwiches, with potato salad, slaw and chips at lunch time for Capitol workers and others.
McCarter and fellow legislators were back at the Capitol Wednesday for a one-day session to settle a glitch in state budget proposals passed independently by the Senate and House last month, which threatened to close down the state’s Capital Construction Program on July 1.
