HARRISBURG - At least 10 people were killed in downstate Harrisburg when a severe pre-dawn storm pounded southern Illinois and left the city's medical center scrambling to treat an influx of injured, authorities said.
Harrisburg Medical Center CEO Vince Ashley said some of the victims were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital shortly after the storm hit the 9,000-resident city about 5 a.m. He could not immediately estimate how many of the injured were treated at the 78-bed hospital, which also sustained damage. No one was injured at the medical center, he said.
