CHICAGO - Gun owners need to address their love affair with guns, Chicago's controversial Father Michael Pfleger said Monday at a press conference denouncing legislation to legalize concealed carry during this week's veto session.
"Thank God Illinois can be an example and not be pressured into following the rest of the country," he said.
The newly-formed Stop Concealed Carry Coalition is pushing for Illinois to remain the only state in the union that doesn't allow citizens to exercise self-defense by carrying a concealed weapon. Thirty-one lame duck lawmakers not bidding for re-election set the stage for votes with no accountability.
The group organized an online petition which they plan to present to lawmakers when they gather in Springfield Tuesday. They're hoping for 7500 signatures on the online petition drive before presenting to the General Assembly.
The petition found here says it opposes making it legal for Illinoisans to defend themselves against criminals in public, cars, buses, trains, churches, school and libraries, or anywhere else outside their homes:
