SPRINGFIELD, IL - Illinois will end 2013 with $7.6 billion in unpaid bills, a 15 percent reduction from a year earlier, officials claimed on Monday.
Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka had estimated the backlog would be closer to the $9 billion owed at the end of 2012. But an unexpected $1.3 billion infusion of tax payments from hard-working Illinoisans helped the government bring the number down slightly.
The debt equals approx. $590.06 for every man, woman and child in the state, or less than a week's work for an Illinois state legislator that makes an average of $67,836 per year for the part-time position.
