MOUNT VERNON - Jefferson County Board Chairman Bob White is interested in following State Rep. Mike Bost's steps to the State Capitol. The Republican is facing an opponent - Terri Bryant - in the March 18th primary.
White, who along with his wife established an insurance agency, is involved in southern Illinois business networking group that offers support to small businessmen in the area. White says he's seen firsthand the devastating effects of poor state management.
"As Jefferson County Board Chairman, I know the full effect of our State's ineffectiveness. For instance, former Governor Rod Blagojevich bankrupted the Leaky Underground Storage Fund (LUST) that caused a Woodlawn business with 80 employees to file bankruptcy and he raided the Motor Fuel Tax which made it tough to fund our annual road maintenance programs," White wrote on his website. "To the credit of the counties and municipalities of the 115th, we have all managed to perform all of these requirements and not file bankruptcy."
White's election to the Democrat-dominated Jefferson County Board in 2008 started a process that has led to the board now holding a Republican majority. In the swearing in this past December, White was re-elected to the Chairmanship.
In his responses to Illinois Review's 2014 candidate questionnaire, White said he's opposed to the 2011 income tax hike becoming permanent and opposes the graduated income tax idea being pushed by Democrats.
He supports Illinois becoming a right-to-work state and opposes project labor agreements.
He supports taxpayer funded scholarships, education choice, homeschooling freedom and Illinois pulling out of the Common Core curriculum standards.
He supports pension reform and more transparency for campaigns and term limits for legislative leadership. He opposes a ban on leadership having other full time occupations.
He supports photo IDs for voting and opposes the Freedom of Choice Act that would ban any restrictions on abortion. He opposes expanding gambling and red light cameras.
