FRANKFORT - "We definitely need change in Springfield. We need to hire fresh new voices, people who aren't politically connected, people that care about the average taxpayer and business owner in Illinois," says Gayla Smith of Frankfort in her video response to Governor Pat Quinn's recent State of the State address.
Those comments sum up the reasons for Smith's primary bid in the far southwest suburbs to succeed retiring State Rep. Renee Kosel. The 37th House District has a three-way race in the March 18th GOP primary.
Smith works with small businesses to automate their bookkeeping after being in the insurance field for several years. Her familiarity with small business owners has earned her financial support from a substantial number of those businesses.
An active Frankfort resident for 28 years, Gayla Smith is married, and a proud Military Mom, having a son and son-in-law both serving in the United States Navy.
Smith says in Illinois Review's 2014 candidate survey that she is opposed to making the 2011 income tax hike permanent, and she's opposed to the graduated tax system. She would not take campaign donations from public sector unions, and supports Illinois becoming a right-to-work state.
She opposes scholarships for non-public schools, but doesn't believe homeschools should be registered with the state. She supports Illinois withdrawing from the federal Common Core curriculum standards program.
She supports term limits for legislative leaders, and supports the idea that any bill with five or more co-sponsors get a hearing in committee, even if legislative leaders object.
She supports some gambling expansion and opposes the Freedom of Choice Act that would prevent any abortion restrictions.
