SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Secretary of State says more than two dozen driver's license facilities would close unless lawmakers extend the temporary tax increase the Democrats passed in 2011.
The income tax is set to return to 3.75 percent Jan. 1 unless lawmakers make the tax increase permanent.
White, a Chicago Democrat, says he would have to lay off about 200 government workers, and reduce his agency's budget by about 10 percent.
He also threatened to stop sending renewal notices for licenses and vehicle stickers, which could lead to taxpayers unknowing driving with expired plates and risking tickets and fines.
