Though Illinois taxpayers are being asked to commit $100 million in public funds this spring to help lure the Barack Obama presidential library to Chicago, Mr. Obama's wealthy friends are being told to hold their gifts to a maximum of $1 million each, at least for now.
A well-heeled Chicagoan who's in position to help the president raise the hundreds of millions that eventually will be needed to build and endow the library says the word has gone out to write only a smallish check for now. The big pitch will come sometime after Mr. Obama leaves office in January 2017.
