The Quinn and Rauner campaigns exchanged phony “media advisories” over the last couple of days.
Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn went first, e-mailing a “media advisory” Thursday night with information about two Friday campaign stops for Republican challenger Bruce Rauner. The e-mail said that Rauner “will face reporters and, with a candor yet unseen in his campaign, answer the following questions” dealing with issues involving his role in gaining his daughter admittance to Walter Payton College Prep.
The false “media advisory” listed press contacts as “Lance & Mike, Rauner for Governor” — shorthand for Rauner campaign spokesmen Lance Trover and Mike Schrimpf. It did not list a press contact for the Quinn campaign.
Not to be outdone, the Illinois Republican Party sent out its own “media advisory” on Friday morning. The release, which noted it was from the state GOP, claimed Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin would call on the Democratic governor to testify before a legislative panel looking into Quinn’s pre-2010 election $55 million anti-violence initiative.
Federal prosecutors also are looking into the program, which has been sharply criticized for mismanagement in a state audit.
