SPRINGFIELD, IL - More than ninety-thousand state retirees will be able to get their share of $63 million in premiums the courts determined they improperly paid.
Springfield’s State Journal-Register reports a judge scheduled refunds to be paid to retirees by June 15th. Attorneys for the retirees have said eligible retirees will have to be proactive to get the refunds. The actual amount refunded depends on what kinds of premium payments retirees made to the state and also how much the court determines attorney’s fees will cost.
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the state cannot change retirees fully subsidized health premiums because it violates the state constitution’s provision about government worker benefits.
