GRANITE CITY - U.S. Steel announced Wednesday it plans to temporarily close the Granite City Works plant, laying off 2080 workers. Madison County Chairman Alan Dustan said the company's layoffs would be "devastating" and would affect thousands of workers beyond U.S. Steel.
Dunstan told the St. Louis Business Journal that he and other Madison County officials will do whatever is possible to ensure the plant’s closing "is temporary and not a permanent closure.”
“We will continue to work with the members of our Congressional delegation in an attempt to address the situation that penalizes the United States’ steel industry while making it attractive for businesses to import steel from China and South Korea,” Dunstan said.
The U.S. Steel layoffs will begin May 28, 2015.
