CHICAGO - Illinois’ ongoing struggle between the newly-elected, reform-minded Republican governor and the decades-long Democratic reign in Chicago was ratcheted up a notch last Wednesday.
The Chicago City Council passed a resolution that defied Gov. Bruce Rauner’s declaration that for security reasons he would temporarily halt admission of Syrian refugees into Illinois.
Rauner said the pause would remain in effect until the Department of Homeland Security could assure him their screening process would not allow terrorists to sneak in with those seeking asylum.
Two days later, Chicago aldermen had constructed–and were ready to vote on–a resolution that keeps the door wide open to Syrian refugees despite the Governor’s declared pause.
The resolution says that Illinois has no legal right to dictate immigration policy to the federal government.
