So simply because he has shown a commitment to African-American causes means that he cannot be committed to larger, more universal causes. I am committed to improving literacy among children. Does that mean that is all I can be committed to? Of course not. Your position fails any test of logic. Also you strip the "middleclassness" out of its context and twist it entirely. From Reverend Wright of Trinity UCC:

“The concept of ‘middle class’ is divisive for African Americans,” Wright says. “You’re buying into a hierarchic notion of who God’s people are. There’s a very big difference between being ‘middle class’ and being middle income.

"But neither Republicans nor Democrats, Wright believes, benefit from the current political polarization. And while he doesn’t think that the people of a democracy can ever stand behind a unified set of “moral values,” he thinks there is common ground to be found between the sides and that it can be sought respectfully.

“In a democracy we need to learn how to disagree without breaking up our house and getting a divorce,” he says. “We need to learn how to be unified in terms of nobody should go to bed hungry, nobody should die unnecessarily.”

You, IR, have twisted a message of faith and unity for all and have claimed it to be a message of division. Shame on you.

I'm a African-American Catholic, living in a suburb of Detroit. 40 percent of the residents of Detroit live at or below the poverty line. Unemployment has lowered the standard of living and dashed the hopes of students and hundreds of families. If Mr. Obama and his Church can lift them out of poverty, then it will be an instructive lesson for all of America. The challenge before Mr. Obama has more to do with giving the downtrodden of all creeds hope than the Black Values espoused by his Church. Surely if he can help poor African Americans break the cycle of poverty, then he can help all Americans break the cycle of poverty. Regretably, the socialist policies of Democrats do more to maintain poverty than to end it. If Obama or his Church can achieve some meaningful progress with self determination, then it will be a refreshing change.

No, Sean, shame on you. Shame on you for twisting this issue into a partisan pretzel of illogic that serves your leftist world view.

Stick to the facts, and play them straight, and you'll end up wondering why a Christian church espouses a belief system based on separating Christians by race. Faith and unity this is not.

Wright is a political partisan and a hater, and it is curious to me why so many Christians are willing to accept

Jerry

(cut off) ... this church as anything other than racially divisive.

While it is true that all candidates support 'separate but [not] equal' civil unions over marriage, BARACK OBAMA IS, IN FACT, THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO HAS PROFFERED RELIGION AS HIS SOLE EXCUSE FOR DENYING CIVIL RIGHTS. Don't ask this so called civil rights lawyer for legal reasons. It is axiomatic (that's legal talk for a no-brainer) that if religious beliefs are the only rationale for denying civil rights then the First Amendment is violated. Again not even the Mormon candidate has so insulted the First Amendment in an effort to deny rights protected under the Fourteenth Amendment

"If a civil rights lawyer walked into court and argued that fundamental civil rights should be denied solely for metaphysical religious reasons [religion] one could fairly wonder if he were a charlatan who found his law degree in a box of Cracker Jack. Legally, Obama's position on civil marriage is intellectual rubbish. Audacity indeed!" See "Untangling Barack Obama's audacious mumbo jumbo," by John P. Oh... So NOW people are worried about insulting Constitutional rights?! Where were you when they were passing the Patriot Act?! How insulting is THAT? A law disguised as Pro-American when in actuality STEALS some of our basic civil rights as Americans. There is a difference between insulting the Constitution and introducing new ideas, new values. If there is something wrong with that then I think that our legal tender needs a facelift. I mean, who would dare mention Gods name on our paper notes and coin? Sounds to me like a mergance of 'Church and State'. Wait a minute. It IS!

This church esposes nothing but racism. If this were a white church it would not be tolerated. I am appalled that a church that calls themselves Christian would have such beliefs. God does not see color, social status, education, or any of the things that seem to separate. He is all inclusive. He looks at the heart. The fact Obama belongs to a church that holds these beliefs is more telling to me than anything I have read about him thus far. This nation has been about separation far too long. I just wrote him off as a viable candidate for the presidency of the United States.

You all have so many opinions that are coming somewhere than from who you are trying to defend. Just believe, that's all God asked us to do..just believe. Reach deep inside for what is right, God is the vindicator not you or I or the polls. You will never know what any man's true values are unless you have lived in their shoes, but God does. Until I actually hear from Obama himself that is anything different than what he has PROVEN, I will believe that is he what he says he is. Think about the judgements that have been made about you, were they always correct? There is an answer to every question and a solution to every problem but very few people will be able to answer all the questions and have all the solutions. Obama believes in God, believes in human rights, believes in what the people that are voting for him believe. Just live with it. And just Believe.

I am truly amazed that people would discuss this as major controversy. As a black man in America I do find it refreshing that this church and this candidate does support the assistance towards the black community. It is the inner city poverty that is some of the worst in this nation. No, this is not about separation as some angry-shallowminded individuals would have us all to think. This is about helping those who need help. Those of you who have a problem with this church(which I have attended in the past. Ask yourselves, what are you doing to address this problem? nothing but complain.

Redrockher

The Trinity Church and Pastor Wright spoke about HIV/AIDS in the Black community.

Blacks only account for 15 percent of the US population, yet account for 60 percent of the AIDS cases.

Who will Obama make pay for the medical expenses of these people? The middleclass tax payer.

The few will dictate to the majority.

Blacks will be pulled out of poverty at the expense of other races.

Obama and the Trinity Church are focused on helping those of African descent period!

The one question that should be asked by interviewers or debate moderators is "If you are elected President would you abolish the 'Office of Faith-based Initiatives'", that has ensconced itself in the West Wing, setting a religion/government alliance that is an obvious desertion of the establishment clause. Has any MSM done a comprehensive story about this office's influence, budget, policies etc.?
