Former President Donald Trump has survived a second assassination attempt in just two months after U.S. Secret Service agents spotted a rifle in the bushes aimed in the president’s direction as he golfed with friends on Sunday afternoon at his private Palm Beach, Florida golf club.
In July, Trump was struck in the right ear as Secret Service agents rushed the stage and used their own bodies as shields to protect the injured former president during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. As he stood up, blood was seen coming down the right side of his face. But to project calm during chaos, Trump began pumping his fist telling the audience to “Fight! Fight! Fight!” as he stood underneath the American flag – in a visual that will live on as one of the most iconic images in our nation’s history. Sadly, Corey Comperatore, 50 died from his gunshot wounds as he was trying to shield his family from the bullets. Two others were also seriously wounded.
The incident on Sunday in Palm Beach underscores the dangers that Trump faces after years of attacks by Democrats who have repeatedly called him a “threat to our Democracy.” During a speech last September in Arizona, President Joe Biden said, “This MAGA threat is a threat to the brick and mortar of our democratic institution.”
The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh – a Democrat and supporter of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris was caught by law enforcement officials after a witness saw Routh leave the wooded area surrounding the golf club and get in a vehicle and flee the scene after Secret Service agents fired their weapon in his direction. He was taken into custody about 45 minutes from the club.
After the assassination attempt, President Trump issued a statement:
“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!
Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.
Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.
