Illinois Right to Life Action: What McCann claims about Tom Morrison is “bold-face lie”

300x300CHICAGO – Illinois Right to Life Action (IRLA) responded on Thursday to news of Senator Sam McCann, gubernatorial candidate in the Illinois General Election, attacking pro-life State Representative Tom Morrison in a mail piece to his district. The piece depicts Rep. Morrison as a “Rauner RINO” and advises constituents not to vote for Morrison.

“What Sam McCann claims is a bold-face lie,” said Mary Kate Knorr, spokesperson for Illinois Right to Life Action. “This is an unfounded attack on one of our best pro-life legislators. Rep. Morrison has repeatedly fought Governor Rauner’s deceitful actions. It is inconceivable why the senator would attack him so offhandedly, and it is clearly a political tactic in pursuit of his gubernatorial race.”

In 2010, Morrison was elected to represent Illinois’ 54th district. Illinois Right to Life Action has repeatedly given Morrison the highest pro-life rating on its voter guide for his consistent pro-life voting record.

“Representative Tom Morrison is one of the strongest and most valiant defenders of the pro-life cause in the General Assembly,” said Ralph Rivera, legislative chairman for Illinois Right to Life Action. “As a man committed to his values, he has stood side by side with our many other courageous pro-life legislators, who have never swayed in principal.”

Morrison has also been publicly outspoken about his commitment to the pro-life cause. In the fall of 2017, Governor Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 40 into law, which forced Illinois taxpayers to cover the cost of abortions for those on Medicaid and state employee health insurance through the full nine months of pregnancy. Morrison, who voted against the bill, responded to its passage and the Governor’s betrayal of pro-lifers, saying:

“Governor Bruce Rauner gave us his word in the Spring that he would veto this legislation if it were sent to him… If this legislation is really about the right to choose, then what about my constituents who deserve to have the right to choose not to have their tax dollars used to fund the killing of unborn children? This is a tragic day for Illinois.”
