SPRINGFIELD – A measure making right-to-work ordinances on a local level to be a class A misdemeanor in the state of Illinois was shot down in the Illinois House this week.
With 67 Democrats and 51 Republicans in the Illinois House, Democrat House Speaker Mike Madigan needs every one in his caucus plus four Republican defectors to override any bill veto penned by Republican Governor Bruce Rauner.
An attempt to override Governor Rauner’s veto of SB 1905 failed, despite four Republican House members – Terri Bryant, John Cabello, Dave Severin and David Harris – joining the Democrats.
Speaker Madigan’s effort to bypass Rauner failed by one vote because Democrat Caucus member Sam Yingling was absent. Two other Republicans – January 2017-appointed Tony McCombie and Bill Mitchell – chose to not vote and Mike McAuliffe voted “Present.”
The override measure passed the Illinois Senate earlier in the week.
