The surveillance video showing Lyons Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg and Bridgeview Mayor Steven Landek kissing inside her government office after hours has now become the most-watched video in Illinois Review history.

More than 1.6 million people have viewed the video across Illinois Review’s Facebook and X accounts, an extraordinary reach for a story that began as a local political controversy in Lyons Township.

And the audience has expanded far beyond Illinois.

The story has since been picked up by the New York Post, Daily Mail, Hindustan Times, The Times of India and Barstool Sports, giving the controversy national and international exposure.

Combined, those outlets reach an estimated 230 million readers worldwide each month.

What began with a two-second kiss inside a taxpayer-funded office is now being seen and discussed across the United States, United Kingdom and India.

The footage shows Landek turning toward Hoffenberg, placing both hands on her face and kissing her on the lips inside the township office after hours.

Hoffenberg previously described the encounter as a “peck” and a “lighthearted, friendly and non-romantic moment.”

In a slow-motion sequence, Hoffenberg also appears to reach down and take Landek’s left hand as he turns to walk away, with both of them smiling.

Since the video became public, the political fallout has continued to grow, with Hoffenberg missing two advertised public events and influential local political figures publicly challenging claims she has made in the aftermath.

But the numbers alone show just how far the controversy has traveled.

What began as a local controversy has become an international story with an audience few Illinois political scandals ever reach.

The kiss lasted seconds.

The story went global.
