Skillicorn-66th-state-houseOne of the first actions taken to assist taxpayers during the pandemic crisis was an extension on state and federal tax filings and now State Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake) is pushing legislation to give Illinois residents more time to pay their property taxes.

“The government mandated shutdown of our economy is taking a toll on homeowners across the state,” Skillicorn said. “People are hurting right now through no fault of their own. The least we can do is give property owners a little more time to pay their tax bill.”

Skillicorn has filed House Bill 5768 which pushes back the first installment of property tax payments 90 days when the Governor declares a disaster for all counties in Illinois due to a public health emergency. Additionally, no penalties or interest would accrue during the extension.

“All this legislation does is give homeowners a little more time to pay their property taxes without accruing additional costs as a result of penalties and interest,” Skillicorn said. “Once we get the extension done, then we can work on drastically reducing the property tax burden in Illinois beginning this year.”

House Bill 5768 has been filed and awaits assignment to a legislation committee.
