Don’t expect a cut in IL gas taxes July 1st. They’re just not going UP 2.2 cents a gallon … yet

Opinion: We’ll Save You If We See You Burning

SPRINGFIELD – If you're hoping to see the price at Illinois gas pumps go down this weekend like Governor Pritzker has told everyone is going to happen, you'll be disappointed, the gas distributors are explaining.

It's just that they've DELAYED a 2.2 cents per gallon gas tax hike that was supposed to start July 1st. So that means nothing will change today.

Here's a letter gas station owners got today to clear up the mess and answer their customers that were effectively misled, or shall we say "lied to" by Pritzker and the Democrats:

If you can't see the image, here's what the letter says;

RE: Motor Fuel Tax suspension

There is some confusion about the suspension of the motor fuel tax that goes into effect July 1, 2022. The legislature had passed an INCREASE of 2.2 cents that was supposed to go into effect July 1, 2022. They are not going to implement this.

The Illinois tax stays the same as it was:

39.2 cents per gallon for Gasoline

46.7 cents per gallon for diesel

The sales tax from 35 to 45 cents per gallon is still in place.

With all the hype out there, I think some customers think the price is going down 40-50 cents. The taxes are the same as they were yesterday. They just didn't add another 2.2 cents.

I hope this helps you answer questions from customers.

Clearly, Illinois' gas prices are approximately 75 cents per gallon higher because of taxes – gasoline/diesel tax AND sales tax – on each gallon.

Who feels this pain the most? Those that live in rural areas and suburban areas – the middle class, the working poor, the "essential workers" that are abused with outrageous state taxes.
