Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has regularly pointed to his business and investment background as part of his resume.
But his own net-worth history raises a question: if Pritzker is an accomplished businessman and investor, why has his personal fortune grown so slowly compared with other billionaire investors?
Forbes currently estimates Pritzker’s net worth at approximately $4.2 billion, with the source listed as hotels and investments. Forbes describes him as an heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune who ran private-equity firm Pritzker Group with his brother Anthony before leaving in 2017.
The broader Pritzker family fortune is estimated at $53.2 billion, built around Hyatt Hotels, industrial conglomerate Marmon and generations of family investments.
Pritzker has remained enormously wealthy. What he hasn’t done is multiply that fortune at anything approaching the pace of several other prominent American billionaires.
Forbes estimated Pritzker at roughly $3.2 billion around the time he became governor in 2019. Seven years later, he stands at about $4.2 billion – an increase of roughly 31 percent.
During that same stretch, Citadel founder Ken Griffin’s estimated fortune climbed from about $11.7 billion to $53.5 billion. Griffin continues to run Citadel, which Forbes says manages $68 billion, while Citadel Securities handles roughly one out of every four U.S. stock trades.

Blackstone co-founder Stephen Schwarzman’s fortune has similarly surged, from roughly $13 billion in 2019 to $45.9 billion today. Schwarzman remains chairman and CEO of Blackstone, now the world’s largest alternative asset manager, with more than $1 trillion under management.
Warren Buffett has added tens of billions to his own fortune despite giving away more than $68 billion during his lifetime. Forbes recently estimated Buffett at approximately $143.5 billion.
Pritzker’s story looks different. His wealth traces directly to one of America’s largest family fortunes. Forbes says the Pritzker’s spent the 2000s dividing the family empire built through Hyatt, Marmon and other investments; today, JB Pritzker remains one of numerous billionaire heirs to that fortune.
Even within his own family, the comparison is notable. Forbes estimates Pritzker’s brother Anthony at approximately $5 billion. Anthony continues running the family’s private-equity operations, and Forbes reports that Pritzker Private Capital has raised $7.9 billion from family and outside investors since 2017, with investments that include SpaceX.
Pritzker’s sister Penny, another active investor, is worth approximately $5.7 billion; Forbes credits her with founding private investment firm PSP Partners and co-founding Artemis Real Estate Partners.
JB Pritzker inherited extraordinary wealth and took part in the family investment business. But his publicly estimated fortune has shown comparatively modest growth since he took office – his money grew substantially as the family empire was divided, then the trajectory flattened considerably.
For someone who touts his business credentials, the comparison is hard to miss: Griffin, Schwarzman and Buffett multiplied their fortunes. Pritzker inherited his.
The bigger question is how much he’s actually built from there.
