Washington, DC – On October 2, 2017, Americans woke to news of a horrific tragedy in Las Vegas: an evil and senseless attack on innocent victims. Shortly after, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16)drafted a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) urging a thorough re-evaluation of bump-stocks—devices reported to have been used by the perpetrator to dramatically increase the discharge rate of his firearms as he carried out these senseless killings.

With the support of 78 colleagues in the House, and co-led by his fellow veterans, Representatives Mike Gallagher (WI-08) and Martha McSally (AZ-02), Congressman Kinzinger sent the attached bipartisan letter to the ATF earlier today. After sending the letter, Congressman Kinzinger released this statement:

“As Members of Congress, it is our responsibility to look at what happened in Las Vegas, and see if we can find ways to take action. While we cannot prevent tragedy, nor stop evil in all its many forms, actions can be taken. This letter to the ATF is a common-sense step in the right direction, and a quicker and more effective way of getting something done on bump-stock (fully-automatic simulator) devices.

“In addressing this issue, it was concerning to learn that the ATF determined these devices to be compliant with federal law back in 2010 and 2012. With our letter, we ask the ATF to re-evaluate these devices. It is my hope that they conclude these mechanisms violate the spirit, if not the letter, of the law and take swift action to ban such devices.

“I’m proud to have the support of so many colleagues, including our House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers. This bipartisan letter sends a strong message that these fully-automatic simulator devices have no place in civil society.”
