By Mark Weyermuller -

It's been a busy week with holidays.  On Tuesday, we had National Pancake Day with the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) giving away free pancakes to raise money for charity. Thousands lined lined up all day as an estimated five million pancakes were given away. Donations received were used to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, Shriners Hospital for Children and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Earlier in the week on Monday as part of my day job, I had to go do some business at a City of Chicago business office. Well guess what, it was closed for Casimir Pulaski Day.  I have no issue with Pulaski or any people of Polish descent, but why is this a holiday?

At issue is City of Chicago offices are closed so no city business is conducted.  Essential city services continue but all city employees receive double time so tax payers absorb the cost. Local officials want to add to this with a possible paid holiday for Barack Obama's birthday.  No offense to the former president, but another paid holiday will just cost taxpayers millions in a state and city that is broke.

A couple weeks ago we had the "Day Without Immigrants Day."   Many supported it while others called it "Day Without Illegal Immigration Day." This was not really a holiday but more of a strike and an attempt to organize labor. It did bring attention to both sides of the issue of illegal immigration.

Now this week we will have the "Day Without Women Day."  According to news reports, many schools across the country are closing for this.  This holiday seems to be more a work action by teachers unions as it will actually have a negative effect on many women especially working moms.

This like other official holidays will cost tax payers as we will lose yet another of work. Unfortunately,  we cannot seem to have "a day without tax payers."  I'm sorry but I'm about worn out on holidays. I'm just glad there is no "Day Without Pancakes."
