Everett-Piper-1400px-1024x1024ST LOUIS – Once a "Never Trumper," Dr. Everett Piper told an audience of conservative activists last weekend that he was "wrong about Trump."

Born in 1959, Dr. Piper is an American former university president, author of Not a Day Care, and Washington Times columnist. He served as President of Oklahoma Wesleyan University from August 2002 until his retirement in May of 2019.

Piper's “Then and Now” Trump commentaries

Here is Piper's anti-Trump 2016 prospective of January 16, “Trumping Morality,” explaining why Donald Trump would not be invited to his university.

“Anyone who is pro-abortion is not on my side. Anyone who calls women “pigs,” “ugly,” “fat” and “pieces of a–” is not on my side. Anyone who mocks the handicapped is not on my side. Anyone who has argued the merits of a government takeover of banks, student loans, the auto industry and healthcare is not on my side. Anyone who has been on the cover of Playboy and proud of it, who brags of his sexual history with multiple women and who owns strip clubs in his casinos is not on my side. Anyone who believes the government can wrest control of the definition of marriage from the church is not on my side. Anyone who ignores the separation of powers and boasts of making the executive branch even more imperial is not on my side.”

Piper ended his blog saying that he will not sell his soul “to a political process that values victory more than virtue."

As Dr. Piper explained, soon after writing his article disowning Trump, he received a phone call from Tony Perkins asking him if he wanted to meet with Donald Trump. Trump is calling 20-30 evangelical leaders to meet with him at Trump Towers.  Only five would be allowed to ask questions because of time restraints.

Piper agreed to attend.  On vacation at the time, Piper had to buy a jacket to look presentable.  When Donald Trump walked into the place of the meeting, he starting working the room shaking hands from person to person. He said few words, mostly just listened.  Piper came away from the meeting surprised at what he had heard.

Why I changed and don't apologize for it

By 2019, Piper had changed his mind about President Trump in a Washington Times editorial published on Friday, December 6th, 2019, If you value human life you must vote for Trump”.

Wrote Dr. Piper:

In this election season, one thing becomes more evident every day. If you value human life, you have no choice but to vote for Donald Trump.”

“How can you say that,” you shout. “How can anyone claim that only one man or one party stands for human life and the dignity of the human being? There is a one-word answer: Abortion.”

‘’Oh, I can hear the chorus of malcontents. “You conservatives are so myopic. You need to move beyond your fixation on this single issue. Yes, abortion is often a difficult decision, and the fewer, the better, but what about the millions of people who will suffer at the hands of climate change, global warming, cultural appropriation, economic inequality, and social injustice?

Christianity Today's controversial editorial

Lastly, Dr. Piper commented on the Dec. 14, 2019, controversial commentary published in Christianity Today, essentially saying the same thing that Piper had said three years earlier. Commenting on the present impeachment debate, the Christianity Today editor in chief, Mark Galli, called for the immediate removal of Donald Trump as our nation’s president.

As editor Galli wrote: “President Trump is “a near-perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.” He then went on to state that none of the president’s positive qualities outweigh the “moral and political danger” America now faces under his leadership.

Mr. Galli concluded: “We call for the many evangelicals who support the president to remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr.Trump influences your witness …”

As Piper explained: “What Christianity Today said and what I said three years ago is, by and large, the same thing. Mark Galli is stiffening his back, as I did three years ago, and boldly asserting that in the present political climate, the church’s summum bonum — its highest good — is to assure the defeat of Donald Trump. Why? Because the president has demonstrated himself to be a man prone to unbiblical behavior and voting for him is akin to “sacrificing our prophetic voice” in the public square.

It's important to admit when you are wrong and vote for the higher good.

Coming soon will be an article by Thorner covering the remarks given at the Gathering of Eagles by Alex Newman, "The Deep State:  It's a war on Trump and How to Fight Back."  Newman is a foreign correspondent for The New American.
