PEORIA, IL – U.S. Representative Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) announced Friday he is running for re-election to Congress in 2022 and intends to run in the newly drawn 16th Congressional District.

“As the redistricting process comes to a conclusion I am confident the opportunity exists for me to continue my service in Congress and I am announcing my intent to run for re-election in 2022,” said LaHood. “It’s unfortunate that politics has played such a huge role in this process, and that Governor Pritzker lied to voters when he promised to take politics out of the mapping process in Illinois. I am grateful to the residents across Illinois who have encouraged me to run and already pledged their support to our campaign. I look forward to hitting the campaign trail, running a vigorous race, and working hard to win in 2022.”

LaHood was first elected in to serve the 18th District of Illinois in 2015, and was re-elected in 2016, 2018, and 2020. He was endorsed by President Trump in 2020 and won that year with over 70% of the vote. Prior to serving in Congress, LaHood represented north-central Illinois in the Illinois State Senate’s 37th District. During his time in Congress and in the State Senate, LaHood has represented over 50% of the counties in the newly drawn 16th District.

“This map has Congressman LaHood representing the new Illinois 16th District,” said LaHood for Congress Political Director Jim Reis. “He’s very familiar with much of the new district already. Between his time representing the 37th District in the Illinois State Senate and the IL-18th in the U.S. House of Representatives, he’s already represented the southern and central parts of the new IL-16th District. The 16th retains his home base of Peoria and Bloomington-Normal and then moves north and west from Rockford to Galena on the Illinois state line. As a strong conservative Republican leader on the local, state, and federal levels, Congressman LaHood retains the support of old friends and is already getting a ton of support and encouragement from the new parts of the district.”

During his time in Congress, LaHood has established convincing conservative credentials. LaHood stood with President Trump against China’s unfair trade practices, he supported the Trump tax cuts which led to a record economy,  he has been a strong supporter of the pro-life movement, he has fought against burdensome regulations, and voted against unnecessary government spending. During the 2020 session of Congress, LaHood was the only member of the Illinois congressional delegation to be recognized by the American Conservative Union for his conservative record – receiving the Award for Conservative Achievement.

“As I travel across Illinois it is clear there is more work to be done to restore a Republican majority in Congress. I’ve spoken to voters across the state and it’s clear they want a strong conservative voice in Washington representing our values and speaking for our communities. I was called to run for Congress in 2015 because I believe in the values of our region – hard work, integrity, and strong faith. When I was elected I committed to the voters I would restore trust with them, represent their values, and provide the highest level of constituent service possible. I am proud of what we have accomplished, proud of my conservative record in Washington, and proud to remain firmly rooted here in Illinois.”

LaHood is currently the National Finance Chair of the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC), where he has worked to raise money and recruit Republican candidates across the country to take back the House in 2022. The NRCC raised $25.8 million in the third quarter of 2021. The NRCC has raised over $105 million this year with $65 million cash on hand, nearly a 75% increase over the same period two years ago.

This month, LaHood for Congress announced raising over $600,000 in the third quarter of 2021. LaHood for Congress has raised over $1.5 million in 2021 and has over $3.93 million cash on hand.
