Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Watergate Hotel break-in on June 17, 1972. The scandal and coverup lead to the resignation of President Richard Nixon after a series of congressional hearings.

Much of the hearings centered around tape recordings made by Nixon from the Oval Office.  Several years ago while in Washington D,.C. I took a photo (seen above) with the famous oval office tape recorder now in a museum there.

On this day 50 years ago today, five men who claimed to be plumbers broke into the democratic headquarters located at the Watergate Hotel to steal information for the upcoming campaign. The various trials and hearings lead to 69 people being indicted, 48 were connected with the Nixon White House.

I was just 13 years old in 1973 when the Watergate Hearings were shown live on all the major television networks.  At that time with no cable or internet, the only source of news was CBS, ABC, NBC, & the daily newspapers.

In 1976, the film “All the President’s Men” was released starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as the Washington Post reporters exposing much of the cover-up. In 1994, the film Forest Gump depicted the break-in at the Watergate Hotel. Unrelated but years later Monica Lewinski lived in apartments at the Watergate Hotel.  This was another scandal involving President Bill Clinton.

Today, 59 years later we have a new set of hearings called the “ United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack Public Hearing.”   Many are calling that day “an insurrection.” Others are calling it a witch-hunt to topple President Donald J. Trump. Time will tell but it appears very similar to the Watergate Hearings. The country is very divided on its opinions on that day, January 6, 2020.

Meanwhile there have been no hearings or arrests on allegations that Hillary Clinton’s campaign spied on the Trump Tower campaign office with possible wiretaps. During this time period, CNN had this headline: “Hillary Clinton personally approved plan to share Trump-Russia allegation with the press in 2016 campaign manager says.” This is often referred to by many as “Russian collusion.”  The Trump campaign referred to it as “the Russian Hoax.”  The point is these campaigns are often full of  “dirty tricks.”

Totally unrelated on this day, 28 years ago on June 17, 1994, was the famous or infamous O.J. Simpson Bronco Chase shown on television with millions watching it live. Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.  This resulted in a trial that captivated the nation.

Aside from all the events in history, President Donald will be traveling to Illinois next Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 7:00 pm. The rally is in support center of Congressman Mary Miller and will be held at the Adam’s County Fairgrounds in Mendon, Illinois near Quincy. The event is free with ticket Information on this link.

The Illinois primary election is just 11 days away on Tuesday, June  28, 2022 with early voting happening now.  The general election referred to as the midterms are Tuesday, November 8, 2022.
