The results are in – and Nancy Pelosi is fired.

In a speech that paralyzed Washington, outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she would not seek re-election as leader of the Democratic Caucus in the next Congress – bringing to an end a two-decade career as Democratic leader. Pelosi served as the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. She has served in the House for 35 years.

“I will not seek re-election as Democratic leader of our caucus in the next Congress,” Speaker Pelosi said. “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect.”

During her speech, Pelosi said she worked with three Presidents as House Speaker – an apparent jab at former President Donald Trump. Pelosi served as third in line to the Presidency under George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joseph Biden.

In 2020, Pelosi famously ripped up a copy of President Trump’s State of the Union speech – a move that dominated headlines and served as a distraction to media coverage following President Trump’s speech.

On Wednesday evening, Republicans officially took control of the U.S. House of Representatives when Republican Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif., was declared the winner in California’s 27th Congressional District. The victory gave Republicans 218 seats in the House – the necessary seats to officially take back the majority.

Democrats maintain control of the U.S. Senate by a super slim margin, but a divided Congress will certainly slow down Biden’s legislative agenda. It will also set the stage for investigations into Hunter Biden and the Biden family.

Incoming House Speaker Kevin McCarthy understands that challenging times lie ahead, but Republicans are up to the task. And although investigations are top of mind, there are other pressing matters that need to be addressed including the economy, inflation and the rise in crime throughout the country.

“Americans are ready for a new direction, and House Republicans are ready to deliver,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter.
