In a continuation of the deep and historic alliance between the United States and France – an alliance stretching back nearly 250 years – a senior French diplomat visited Chicago this week and met with Illinois Review leadership as part of a broader effort to strengthen dialogue with non-traditional media outlets across the country.

Sébastien Fagart, Spokesperson for the French Embassy in Washington, DC, has made direct engagement with American media a personal priority. Fagart’s outreach reflects a deliberate effort to gather perspectives from diverse news organizations on both domestic and global issues, better understand regional viewpoints, and evaluate how media throughout the U.S. interpret rapidly shifting geopolitical events.

Fagart was joined by Consul General Charlotte Montel, Deputy Consul General Clément Calais, and Pascale Furlong Thome of the Consulate General of France in Chicago. Representing Illinois Review were General Counsel Scott Kaspar and Editor-in-Chief Mark Vargas.

The Chicago Consulate plays a particularly important role in advancing French-American cooperation in the Midwest – especially in the rapidly expanding fields of technology, innovation, and advanced manufacturing. Under the leadership of Consul General Montel, the Consulate has strengthened partnerships with major research universities, supported French tech companies operating in the region, and helped connect Midwestern companies with France’s growing tech ecosystem. These efforts have positioned Chicago – and the U.S. as a key hub for transatlantic collaboration in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and emerging digital industries.

The wide-ranging discussion covered U.S.-European relations, global security challenges, trade and economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and the evolving media landscape. French officials emphasized that maintaining strong ties with American journalists remains essential to reinforcing the U.S.-France partnership – one of the oldest and most consequential bilateral relationships in the world.

By prioritizing conversations with media outlets beyond Washington and the coasts, Fagart hopes to ensure that French policymakers hear the perspectives of Americans from every region, including the Midwest.

For Illinois Review, the meeting provided an opportunity to share insights into the issues shaping public opinion in Illinois – from national security and international trade to economic pressures and cultural diplomacy. Kaspar and Vargas underscored the importance of robust transatlantic dialogue, especially at a time when global alliances are being tested in unprecedented ways.

As Fagart continues engaging with media organizations across the United States, the goal is clear: to strengthen the foundation of trust, cooperation, and mutual respect that has defined the U.S.-France alliance for centuries.

Illinois Review looks forward to continued dialogue with French diplomatic leaders as both nations navigate a complex and rapidly changing world.
