Chicago Police officer Luis M. Huesca, 30, was gunned down early Sunday morning on his way home from work – still in uniform, as law enforcement officials try to gather information to determine whether or not the off-duty police officer was the victim of an armed carjacking.

CWBChicago shared a post on X with audio from the Chicago Police Department Zone 6 radio that indicated the victim’s gun and vehicle were also stolen – suggesting a possible carjacking, as police continue their investigation.

The shooting occurred at 2:53 am in the Gage Park neighborhood located on Chicago’s southwest side, as reports indicate that Huesca – a 6-year veteran of the CPD, was found lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The gravely wounded off-duty officer was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. On Tuesday, Huesca would have celebrated his 31st birthday.

A year ago, Officer Huesca recorded a tribute to his friend and fallen CPD officer Andres Vasquez Lasso, 32, who died in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call on March 1, 2023. In the video, Huesca, who’s in uniform, says,

“He was one of those guys that actually deserved this star. He was very proud to wear this star.”

Huesca continued,

“Have you seen the hundreds of officers that are outside the commemoration – the people that paused doing their daily activities from home – stepped out of their houses, stepped out their vehicles, and silently hold their hand over their hearts. Some others waved the flag – that flag that gave him a chance to outstand. I think Andres would have been very proud.”

Investigators are still looking for a suspect and motives – and no arrests have been made. Huesca is survived by his mother and uncle.
