Rauner fires up Moultrie County Republicans; Cruz wins straw poll

SULLIVAN – Gov. Bruce Rauner spoke to a fired up crowd of over 200 Moultrie County Republicans at their annual Lincoln Day Dinner held Saturday at the Terry Warren farm in rural Sullivan, Illinois.

GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz won the straw poll that was held for the attendees. U.S. Senator Mark Kirk, whose father's family is from Sullivan, easily won against challenger James Marter with 70% of the vote.

In the highly contested 15th CD, GOP incumbent John Shimkus beat challenger Kyle McCarter by a wide margin and in the 102nd State House race for state representative in the 102nd district, Brad Halbrook was the overwhelming winner in a three-way race.

  • Marter 22 votes

  • Shimkus 81 votes
  • McCarter 32 votes

102 State Rep

  • Halbrook 82 votes
  • Peterson 14 votes
  • Acklin 8 votes

Presidential

  • Cruz 40 votes
  • Trump 36 votes
  • Kasich 22 votes
  • Rubio 14 votes
  • Others 8 votes
