SPRINGFIELD – Gun shops would have an array of new regulations that require expensive security systems that would put most of them out of business if legislation coming before the Illinois House passes this week, says the Illinois State Rifle Association.

"Shops would be forced to deploy a long list of costly new business practices in order to maintain their licenses," an alert issued by the ISRA said over the weekend. "It is estimated that these new requirements would add at least $100 to the cost of firearm purchased from a licensed retailer."

Last week, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords announced the “Illinois Gun Violence Prevention Coalition,” at a press conference at the Jesse White Community Center in Chicago. The new group signed onto State Senator Don Harmon's (D-Oak Park) effort.

“This effort is long overdue in Illinois,” Harmon said in a statement. “We’ve been working on these issues for years, and the key thing I’ve learned is this: somewhere in the stream of commerce between a gun manufacturer and a crime scene there is someone purporting to be a law-abiding gun owner, buyer or seller who is anything but.”

While the details of the bill are yet to be released, the ISRA lists what they expect to be included in the proposal, expected to be HB1016:

  • Gun buyers will be videotaped when they purchase a gun and that video tape will be provided to the police. Bottom line – you and your guns will be registered.
  • Firearm retailers will be forced to install state of the art vaults and alarms at their shops. Very few retailers can afford $2 million security systems, so they'll just have to go out of business.
  • Firearm retailers would be required to fill out stacks of new forms and keep reams of paper records covering firearm purchases. Minor record keeping mistakes will result in termination of licenses and shutting down of shops.
  •  The Chicago Police Department will have to right to inspect and audit any gun shop in the state at any time, without justification.
The ISRA is asking gun owners to call Senator Don Harmon's offices and State Rep. Kathleen Willis' offices to oppose the legislation. They also urge contacting their own state senator and representative, urging them to vote against the proposal.

  1. It’s fascist infringement and taxes on our constitutionally protected right to keep & bear arms.
    Welcome to police state Chitcago….
    From the Illinois constitution:
    SECTION 22. RIGHT TO ARMS
Subject only to the police power, the RIGHT of the individual citizen to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. (Source: Illinois Constitution.)
The power to tax involves the power to destroy. You are destroying our constitutionally protected right. Making gun costs prohibitive is infringement you dirtbag fascists. STOP IT NOW, YOU TRAITORS! YOUR TYRANNY IS HARMING HONEST LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS.
AND GIFFORDS, TAKE YOUR FREEDOM STEALING BUTT BACK ACROSS THE ILLINOIS BORDER, POWER ABUSERS AND TRAITORS AREN’T WELCOME HERE.

  2. Article one, section eight, clauses fifteen and sixteen of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the states from banning OR restricting (Infringement) arms and disarming the militias (citizens). The tenth amendment states the powers not delegated to the federal gov’t by the U.S. Constitution or prohibited by the U.S. constitution to the states are reserved to the states respectively. The states are prohibited by the tenth amendment. It should be obvious to everyone the states are prohibited by the U.S, constitution the authority to disarm the militias and or infringe the right to keep and bear arms since the constitution explicitly grants congress authority over state militias with the only exceptions being the appointment of officers and training. Remember also, the second amendment prohibits the infringement of the right to keep and bear arms by the federal govt.
“I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.” – George Mason, in Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution 1788
Don Harmon, you should read the Constitution sometime…

  3. Why the Hell is Gabby Giffords promoting this in Illinois???
She does not live in this state.
Is she here because she couldn’t get away with this in the western state from whence she comes?
    GO HOME GABBY!! GO HOME!!

  4. Here we are in The People’s Socialist Republic of Illinois. Another wasteland of elected near-do-wells that know how to dictate the lives of their constituents. Giffords just needs to take her opinions and anti-American attitude somewhere it is appreciated, like, Russia or Communist China.
We need to remember, not forget State Senator Harmon and Representative Willis when they expect our votes!
let’s deny them their privilege to serve and send them to a fast food line. Make it clear to THEM we do not appreciate nor respect their intrusion and insult to our Constitutional Rights.
What part of the definition of “shall NOT be
    infringed” do you NOT understand??
This will prove to be a disaster. It will cost jobs. It will drive business out of the state. It will embolden criminals and create a black-market not seen since Prohibition.
So Honorable (dis) Senator Harmon and un-Representative Willis you choose to punish honest business establishments and criminalize citizens legal rights!
SHAME ON YOU!!! Cowards… do nothing to criminals but do penalize We The People!

  5. Her Husband committed a Felony gun purchase of an AR-15, that he did not purchase for himself, but rather as a Straw Purchase…that he intended to give to a Police Dept. But, it is okay for the Giffords to violate gun laws!
