Declassified report points to Putin and Russian government involvement in U.S. election

WASHINGTON – Despite President-elect Donald Trump's published reaction to the contrary, The Hill is reporting that an intelligence report declassified and released Friday shows that Russian President Putin ordered a media campaign to help elect Trump.

From the Intelligence Community Assessment:

We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump. We have high confidence in these judgments.

  • We also assess Putin and the Russian Government aspired to help President-elect Trump’s election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him. All three agencies agree with this judgment. CIA and FBI have high confidence in this judgment; NSA has moderate confidence.

  • Moscow’s approach evolved over the course of the campaign based on Russia’s understanding of the electoral prospects of the two main candidates. When it appeared to Moscow that Secretary Clinton was likely to win the election, the Russian influence campaign began to focus more on undermining her future presidency.

  • Further information has come to light since Election Day that, when combined with Russian behavior since early November 2016, increases our confidence in our assessments of Russian motivations and goals.

However, the report contains numerous admitted assessments and projections. For example, they write:

The General Staff Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) probably began cyber operations aimed at the US election by March 2016. We assess that the GRU operations resulted in the compromise of the personal e-mail accounts of Democratic Party officials and political figures. By May, the GRU had exfiltrated large volumes of data from the DNC.

"Probably" used in the assessment suggests they are not sure exactly when the GRU operation commenced which led to Wikileaks' publication of DNC Chief John Podesta's emails. Julian Assange told Fox News' Sean Hannity in an exclusive interview that Assange was absolutely sure the Russian government had nothing to do with obtaining the emails, however he did not identify the source.

The intelligence sources say the WikiLeaks source was "Guccifer 2.0" – a false persona set into place by the Russian government.

From Page 11 and 12 of the report:

We assess with high confidence that the GRU used the Guccifer 2.0 persona, DCLeaks.com, and WikiLeaks to release US victim data obtained in cyber operations publicly and in exclusives to media outlets.

  • Guccifer 2.0, who claimed to be an independent Romanian hacker, made multiple contradictory statements and false claims about his likely Russian identity throughout the election. Press reporting suggests more than one person claiming to be Guccifer 2.0 interacted with journalists.
  • Content that we assess was taken from e-mail accounts targeted by the GRU in March 2016 appeared on DCLeaks.com starting in June.

The report points to Russian-based media sources that criticized Hillary Clinton and American policy as more evidence the Russians were focused on affecting the 2016 presidential election.

  1. So, basically what this report says is that whoever did the hacking just reported the Clinton and DNC corruption that the MSM wouldn’t report. Got it.
Hum, seems like some slug in the US was trying a affect a election in Israel not too long ago.

  2. good work comrades.. you attack your own us intelligence community in favor of our chosen Trump. Good Good… soon US intelligence will be dismantled by Trump regardless. We use fake news of muslims in intellgence service and then dismantle pesky US CIA and FBI…. no worries KGB will keep you safe,
You all get russian citizen award like your new Secretary of Exxon… Oop I means Secretary of State….
    Learn Russian comrades.

  3. Ha!
And you just continue to sign your rights over to the muzzies while some of us fight against sharia and the murderous “religion” (ha! Yeah, right!) that cherishes it.
I said it before and I’ll say it again:
I’d rather have Putin as president than Clinton or obama – Putin knows how to kill jihadis – Clinton/obama do not.

  4. The intelligence community are known to violate the law… while I know you and Obama have no respect for the law most of us do.
The intelligence community has no accountability. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. ~ Lord Acton
The so-called intelligence community has too much power….

  5. No Really, all this report shows is that U.S. intelligence agencies became politicized under Obama, which was obvious when James Comie recommended that Hillary not be prosecuted for her illegal private server, although he admitted that anyone else would have been. Cyber attacks by China and Russia occurred all throughout Obama’s tenure, but were dismissed by his administration, until Hillary lost the election. U.S. intelligence agencies had all this information recently released for months before the election, but didn’t do a thing about it. What is even more preposterous is that Hillary’s illegal server containing classified material was almost definitely hacked, but you fools on the left claim that this had no bearing on security.

  6. good good comrade… you get the biggest medal. How’s your Russian comrade? Keep attacking US intelligence. We will dismantle for you…. fake news about muslims in government… we did good with that no comrade? perfect excuse to dismantle pesky FBI and CIA. Trump will make US into better Russia.
After our pick Trump weakens the US we will take over make everything good again. English version of Pravda already being designed.

  7. Looks like you still believe ISIS is the JV team and the NSA doesn’t collect data on Americans. Oh, and congratulations on that war to dismantle Saddam Hussein’s WMDs.
Thanks to Wikileaks we now know what the Democrat Party did to Bernie Sanders and his supporters.

  8. I “really” have no idea what you are talking about. Just a few short years ago, Obama was whispering in Putin’s ear that “after the election, I’ll have more flexibility.” Your beloved Hillary sold 20% or more of U.S. uranium to Russia. Why would she do that if Russians are “the enemy?” Obama didn’t think so in 2010 when he enacted his “reset policy” to befriend Russia. The only change is that Hillary lost so the Dems need a scapegoat instead of facing the truth, which is that she was a lousy candidate and the voters rejected her.
