WHEATON – Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law a bill passed by Democrats to protect illegal aliens residing in Illinois earlier this year. The action upset Republican conservatives statewide, and provoked a GOP primary challenger - Jeanne Ives, who spoke out Friday about the controversial murder verdict in San Francisco Thursday night.

Ives called Governor Bruce Rauner a "weak man" for signing the Democrats' bill into law, making Illinois effectively a sanctuary state as San Francisco was when 30 year old Kate Steinle was brutally murdered by a person that had been deported five times.

“My heart breaks for Kate Steinle’s family. They have suffered an unimaginable loss and now have been denied justice for the man who shot and killed her," Ives said. "If San Francisco’s immigration laws had been enforced, Kate would be alive today.

Ives aid in making Illinois a Sanctuary State, Governor Rauner made Illinoisans less safe. The state already has “Kate Steinle” tragedies.

“In Chicago, William McCann was hit with a car and dragged to his death by a man who was in the country illegally. The man was not held for Federal Immigration agents. He has escaped the grasp of law enforcement. Mr. McCann’s family has been denied justice, just as the Steinle family has," Ives said.

“In Schaumburg, Tiffany Thrasher was sexually assaulted, then strangled in her apartment. The man who killed her is a Mexican citizen, whose immigration status at the time of his apprehension was unclear. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have filed a detainer."

The Executive Office is charged with law enforcement, the state rep said.

"Unfortunately, we have a weak man in the role of chief law enforcer. Bruce Rauner did not have to make Illinois a sanctuary state, but he did. And in doing so, he betrayed all families he was elected to protect.”
