WHEATON – A new Ives campaign ad features Brian McCann, whose brother Denny was killed in Chicago six years ago by a drunken driver that was in the U.S. illegally.

McCann was one victimized family member that Governor Rauner promised Fox News' Bret Baier in August 2017 he would speak to before signing SB 31 – that protects illegals from law enforcement – into law.

BAIER:  There are some families who say they’ve lost loved ones because of sanctuary status or policy and they’re trying to meet with you. Do you want to hear that point of view?

RAUNER:  I want to hear everybody’s point of view. I work for everybody in the state of Illinois.  Our immigration system is broken and we need to have a system that keeps the people of Illinois safe, the people of America safe. We’ve got to put that as the first priority.

Though staff reportedly had placed McCann's number on Governor Rauner's call list before the signing, the governor refused to make the call and signed the bill into law.

McCann spoke with Illinois Review just before the governor's action, and he didn't hold back his frustration.

"No, the governor hasn't called me yet," Brian McCann told Illinois Review in August. "It's very disappointing. There are four families that want a chance to share their stories with him in person. We're all hoping he does what he said he would do."

And that was that Rauner would hear their point of view.

It never happened.

Governor Bruce Rauner told reporters at the bill signing he didn't know anything about the families that wanted to speak with him. McCann was told that his cell and phone numbers were on the governor's call list a week before the signing. McCann never heard from the governor.

"Insult to injury continues," McCann told Fox News' Mike Tobin. "They know better. This is an issue of safety."

McCann's brother's killer was released from Chicago Police detainment after he posted a $25,000 bond. The killer is now living in Mexico, yet to be punished for his crime.
