Would banning assault weapons in the U.S. prevent mass shootings? Australia tried that. The truth is that Mass shootings were rare before their 1996 National Firearms Act and multiple-casualty shootings still occur in Australia. Australia did not see a reduction in “mass murders” either. In the years immediately following the National Firearms Act, the country experienced 6 mass murders in which 5 or more people were killed. They just weren't killed with guns.
