LAKE COUNTY – Friday, former Lake County sheriff Mark Curran expressed on Facebook his disgust with yet another personal right-limiting bill passing through the Illinois General Assembly this spring. A measure that former Gov Bruce Rauner vetoed is headed for Gov JB Pritzker's desk and he's going to sign it. The bill makes it illegal for anyone in Illinois under age 21 to smoke or vape.

"You can have genital mutilation at age 16 but not smoke a cigar until you're 21? Way to go, Illinois," Curran posted above a photo of him and one of his sons. "Anything they can do to lengthen you life and corrupt your soul because that is all there is for our Pagan Government.

"This law will not be adhered to in my house," he declared.

The bill amends

the Prevention of Tobacco Use by Minors and Sale and Distribution of Tobacco Products Act. Changes the name of the Act to the Prevention of Tobacco Use by Persons under 21 Years of Age and Sale and Distribution of Tobacco Products Act. Raises the age for whom tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and alternative nicotine products may be sold to and possessed by from at least 18 years of age to at least 21 years of age. Defines "electronic cigarette". Repeals the Smokeless Tobacco Limitation Act. Amends various other Acts to make conforming changes. Effective July 1, 2019.

So what are your thoughts? Should law enforcement defy a law with which he disagrees? Or has Springfield just gone too, too far?

  1. Good for him! The nanny state has found a home in Illinois. When asked my age to buy a pack of smokes (I’m over 70), I make up something preposterous, and hope others do, too. I was carded at Kroger when I bought wine! There are eighteen year-olds in combat, but our do-gooder state thinks they are too young to buy cigarettes. When I was in the army, we had little mini pack of camels in our C-rations. Bet that would frost J.B.

  2. I’m pretty sure that the tobacco smoking age was raised to set up recreational marijuana legalization. If they make tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol ages the same, they will meet less resistance.

  3. I see “Sanctuary State” Curran has weighed in. I guess he thinks this is a way to stay politically viable. I agree, at 18 you should be allowed to carry a gun, smoke and anything else an adult could do. But even so, go away, Mark. You shouldn’t have lost your race and you are a big reason why Rauner beat Ives and buried the entire Republican ticket into oblivion. Had you and your fellow “pro-life” Lake County Republicans like Joe Walsh, Dan McConchie, etc. taken on Rauner, it would have been felt over the state and changed a heart breaking close loss into a primary victory for Ives.
NO, I don’t think Ives would have beaten Pritzker but it would have been far closer and we would have kept a Congressional seat and many county board and state legislative seats. And Ives would have been in the perfect position to beat Pritzker in 2022. As it is, even though Pritzker and his buddies will ruin the state between now and 2022, the Republican Party is too much of a shell to take advantage of it.
