Opinion: How Does a Republican Win In A Blue State in 2026?

VIRGINIA – The Republican National Committee is glowing after reports of Tuesday's elections – not only in Virginia and New Jersey, but other states as well.

The RNC says they assisted in a number of states with volunteers, on-the-ground staff, victory offices, community centers, and by making millions of volunteer voter contacts across the country.

As the Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman said, last night’s “results are consistent [with] a political environment in which Republicans would comfortably take back both the House and Senate in 2022.”

Here’s just how deep Republican victories went last night:

In Virginia:

  • Republicans won a clean sweep of statewide Virginia offices.
    • Glenn Youngkin is on pace to receive more votes than any other candidate for statewide office in Virginia history.
      • The latest results show that Youngkin made gains in every single county in Virginia compared to the 2020 presidential election.
      • Fox News Voter Analysis shows that Youngkin won Hispanics and Latinos by a 55%-44%.
    • Veteran Winsome Sears won, becoming the first woman and first black woman Lieutenant Governor in the state’s history.
    • Jason Miyares – the son of a Cuban exile – will become the state’s first Hispanic Attorney General.
    • Before tonight, Republicans had not won a statewide election since 2009.
      • Biden even campaigned for McAuliffe, but it turns out McAuliffe was right when he admitted weeks ago that Biden is “unpopular” and would be a drag on down-ballot Democrats.
  • Republicans flipped at least six seats in the House of Delegates, regaining the majority and ending Democrat control of the chamber.

In deep-blue New Jersey:

  • Republican Jack Ciattarelli is neck-and-neck with Democrat Phil Murphy, in a state Biden won by 16 points just last year.
  • Democrats saw a complete collapse of support in South Jersey.
    • Democrat state Senate President Steve Sweeney trails his Republican challenger, who, as off 11 days before the election, had spent just $153 on his campaign.

In Ohio:

  • Political newcomer Mike Carey won the special election in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District by a nearly 17-point margin even though Democrats were privately saying they thought they could win.
    • Biden endorsed Democrat Allison Russo in the race. Looks like that didn’t help much.

In Pennsylvania:

  • In statewide judicial elections, Republicans have won all three races that have been called.
    • Current results indicate Republicans will likely win the fourth to make a clean sweep.
  • Republicans flipped the Westmoreland District Attorney seat and swept the countywide slate.
  • Republicans also secured key flips in Luzerne, Erie, and Northampton at the local level.

In Washington:

  • In Seattle, Ann Davidson is on the verge of becoming the first Republican to be elected city attorney in more than three decades, defeating radical Democrat candidate Nicole Thomas-Kennedy who ran on eliminating misdemeanor prosecutions.

In Minnesota:

  • In deep-blue Minneapolis, voters overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure to eliminate their police department after a sharp spike in violent crime.

In New York:

  • Republicans had their best night in the Empire State since 2016.
  • A “red wave” swept across Long Island.
    • In Nassau County, Republican Bruce Blakeman is leading Democratic incumbent Laura Curran.
  • Amid spiking crime, New York voters strongly rejected Democrats and their crusade to defund the police.
    • Republicans won several key district attorney elections – Anne Donnelly became the first Republican District Attorney elected in Nassau County in two decades, and Republican Ray Tierney soundly defeated the incumbent Democrat in Suffolk County.
    • Republicans won the newly created 5th District of the State Supreme Court seat.
    • Voters rejected the socialist defund-the-police mayoral candidate India Walton in Buffalo, who was trounced by a write-in campaign.

In New Hampshire:

  • Paul Callaghan won the Rochester, New Hampshire mayor’s race, the first time a Republican has won in nearly two decades.
    • The RNC made nearly 10,000 voter contacts in Rochester.

In Texas:

  • In Texas House District 118, Republican John Lujan won a special election and flipped a previously Democrat-held seat to the GOP.
    • HD-118 is a 73% Latino district that Biden won by 14 points one year ago.
    • Last month, now Representative-elect Lujan headlined the RNC’s community center grand opening in San Antonio.

In the words of Kamala Harris, “What happens in Virginia will in large part determine what happens in 2022, 2024, and on.”

Turns out the red wave has already swept beyond Virginia – last night, a red wave swept across the country.

"Come 2022, that red wave will reach the U.S. House and Senate," the RNC says. "Time for Pelosi and Schumer to start thinking about retirement."
