DOWNERS GROVE – "Fifteen Characteristics of the White Supremacy Culture" as advocated in a 2001 workbook by Kenneth James and Tema Okun entitled "Dismantling Racism" were discussed last week at a western suburban high school. The photo, taken by one of the students sitting in the lecture, made its way to the parent's Facebook page.

Students in the largely white student body learned that perfectionism, sense of urgency, paternalism, fear of open conflict, individualism and power hoarding are all "damaging" things to be rejected and reasons to despise and change themselves.

The workbook from which the list is derived explains:

This is a list of characteristics of white supremacy culture which show up in our organizations. Culture is powerful precisely because it is so present and at the same time so very difficult to name or identify. The characteristics listed below are damaging because they are used as norms and standards without being pro-actively named or chosen by the group. They are damaging because they promote white supremacy thinking. They are damaging to both people of color and to white people. Organizations that are people of color led or a majority people of color can also demonstrate many damaging characteristics of white supremacy culture.

A briefing of the James-Okun perspective on White Supremacy is available through the Minnesota Historical Society. The briefing lists each of the 15 characteristics and suggested "antidotes" to correct the problematic attitudes and perspectives those in the "white culture" display.

The assessment concludes with these words:

One of the purposes of listing characteristics of white supremacy culture is to point out how organizations which unconsciously use these characteristics as their norms and standards make it difficult, if not impossible, to open the door to other cultural norms and standards. As a result, many of our organizations, while saying we want to be multicultural, really only allow other people and cultures to come in if they adapt or conform to already existing cultural norms. Being able to identify and name the cultural norms and standards you want is a first step to making room for a truly multi-cultural organization.

All perspectives the west suburban students are to ponder.

The five largest ethnic groups in DuPage County, IL are White (Non-Hispanic) (65.9%), Asian (Non-Hispanic) (12.2%), White (Hispanic) (10.3%), Black or African American (Non-Hispanic) (4.7%), and Other (Hispanic) (3.15%).

The Minnesota Historical Society file is also available to download.

  1. If you outsource the education of your children this is what you can expect but also deserve as you have abandoned the central tenet and purpose of parenting. Simply put when you send your children off to state indoctrination camps you having willing accepted the role of being the cuckold care giver to the children of the state.
Today, homeschooling is inexpensive, easy to do, and options abound from 0% parental involvement to 100% parent led classroom. Bonus, IL is one of the most home school friendly states there is.

  2. Do Russians or Chinese people teach their students to hate the biggest racial group in their country or is that just an American thing?
And if it’s just an American thing why am I supposed to think America is the best country? Is that what you mean by American exceptionalism? A country with Critical Race Theory? A country that makes itself “diverse” as possible and then teaches its different groups to resent each other?
No Russian or Chinese person ever tried to teach my kids Critical Race Theory.
    America did that.
America is an evil country. Simple as that.

  3. We need to hold these radical liberals accountable. They are dangerous to our children and our country. No more sitting on your hands in the bleachers! Time to kick the BOE and radical teachers out of our schools!

  4. I fear that swome parents only choose to have kids because their friends, or work associates, have them.
It’ may be a kind of “prestige” thing, like buying an new Mercedes because your neighbor has one.
In such cases, they allow the teachers to raise the kids for them, as a taxpayer-paid baby-sitting service.

  5. Bingo. But it is more pervasive than that. Parents use to raise childfree with the direct intention of indoctrinating their children with their values, giving them their world view and sacrificing to provide for educational extras that thy thought would positively impact their children intellectually and socially hence investments in encyclopedia sets and piano lessons.
Today parents, in general, just move their children from one structured activity to another, each activity lead by a stranger who is perceived by the children as an authority figure they should submit to.

  6. The Dateline says “Downers Grove”, which wouldn’t surprise me if it was District 99. More stories like this are coming out more frequently about Downers Grove, Naperville, Hinsdale, etc. This area used to be pretty solid 15 years ago, of course, but it’s no wonder why DuPage county has turned solid blue. The students have been learning this, and the residents continue to vote for school board members that are backed by the teachers’ unions. 10 years later, these students vote the way they were taught. Add some families that moved out of the city or near Western Suburbs, and here we are.

  7. Union members vote for members of other unions.
They don’t dig into details, they just vote that way by reflex. The strain of having to THINK makes their heads hurt.
They vote by habit and heritage, as in:
“My father and grandfather voted Democrat, that’s why I do.”
One of the biggest laughs I had a few years ago was when a friend (a union member) said:
“I just vote for who our Union leaders tell me …they’re ‘smart guys’.”

  8. Henry this garbage is being taught at Downers Grove North and South high schools as well as anti police rhetoric. D99 also allows oral sex images using sex toys and other sexual graphical language. Just Google search D99 and porn you will find more stories. We are actively recruiting parents to run for D99 BOE to replace these radical scumbags then work to fire Hank Thiele the D99 Superintendent behind all this garbage,
