What started as an after-hours kiss inside a taxpayer-funded government office has become an international embarrassment.
The Landek-Hoffenberg video has now been covered by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, New York Post, the UK’s Daily Mail, The Times of India, Hindustan Times and Barstool Sports.
This is no longer a small Lyons Township controversy – it has gone global.
Together, these media outlets reach an estimated 230 million readers every month – putting a local township scandal in front of a massive worldwide audience.
But taxpayers deserve more than carefully crafted explanations about a “lighthearted, friendly and non-romantic moment.” They deserve answers – and they deserve receipts.
Illinois Review will be calling for an independent forensic review of Lyons Township and Bridgeview expenditures involving Bridgeview Mayor Steven Landek and the married Lyons Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg.
The purpose is straightforward: determine whether any public money or government resources were ever used in connection with activities involving the two officials that were unrelated to legitimate government business.
Did taxpayers ever pay for hotels, meals, cocktails, mileage, conferences, travel or events they attended together? Were government credit cards, employees, vehicles, offices or other public resources used for anything outside legitimate governmental purposes? Were expenses charged across multiple public bodies in ways that deserve closer scrutiny?
Those questions should be answered with records, not rhetoric.
Hoffenberg has attempted to redirect the scandal by accusing her Republican opponent, former Cook County Commissioner Liz Gorman, of political harassment and attempted extortion.
Gorman has emphatically denied those allegations, saying she never contacted Hoffenberg, never threatened her and never demanded that she leave the race. A lawful Freedom of Information Act request for government surveillance footage, standing alone, does not substantiate an allegation of extortion.
If Hoffenberg possesses evidence that anyone demanded she withdraw from the race in exchange for suppressing the video, she should release that evidence and identify the person responsible. An accusation this serious should be supported by facts.
Hoffenberg is an attorney and an officer of the court. She knows the weight that words like “extortion” carry. An accusation this serious should not be casually leveled against a political opponent without evidence to support it.
November is right around the corner, and Hoffenberg is asking voters to elect her to the Cook County Board’s 17th District. Although she does not yet hold that County Board seat, this controversy could seriously jeopardize her chances of winning it.
Voters must now evaluate her judgment, her use of a government office, her response to the footage and the credibility of the accusations she has made against Gorman.
Every relevant receipt, hotel folio, reimbursement request, credit-card statement, calendar, email, text message and surveillance-access record should be preserved immediately – especially while questions remain about who accessed, downloaded or possibly deleted government footage.
An ordinary annual audit is not enough. Taxpayers need a targeted forensic review conducted by an independent firm with no political or financial connection to either official. The complete findings should be released publicly – not filtered through politicians behind closed doors.
This is not complicated: If taxpayer money funded nothing improper, open the books and demonstrate it. If a review uncovers misuse of public money or resources, pursue repayment and hold those responsible accountable.
The kiss lasted two seconds. The excuses, accusations and unanswered questions have lasted much longer.
Preserve the records. Follow the money. Let voters see the facts before November.
