Richard Pearson, the longtime executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association and one of Illinois’ most recognizable Second Amendment advocates, received a Lifetime Achievement Award before a crowd of nearly 1,000 gun-rights supporters from across the country.
But Pearson made clear he isn’t treating the honor as a farewell.
“I’m not done yet!” he said as the crowd erupted in laughter.
The award was presented at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference in Dallas, one of the nation’s largest gatherings of Second Amendment attorneys, activists, organizational leaders and grassroots advocates. It recognized Pearson’s years of organizational leadership and policy advocacy on behalf of gun owners in Illinois and nationwide.
As ISRA’s executive director, Pearson has led legislative advocacy, educated members on firearm issues and built grassroots opposition to gun-control measures in Springfield. Under his leadership, the organization has been at the center of major legislative and legal fights over concealed carry, firearm bans and other restrictions on Illinois gun owners.
His work extends beyond Illinois. Pearson has served on the board of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, a reflection of his long-standing role in the national Second Amendment movement.
Pearson called this year’s event a milestone.
“This year’s Gun Rights Policy Conference was the most monumental in the history of the GRPC,” he said, describing the speaker lineup as a “Who’s Who” of the Second Amendment movement.
William Kirk, host of the “Washington Gun Law” YouTube channel, interviewed Barry Arrington, acting chief of the Second Amendment Section of the U.S. Department of Justice. Armed American Radio host Mark Walters interviewed ATF Director Robert Cekada and ATF Chief Counsel Robert Leider live on stage. Other participants included Mark Smith of The Four Boxes Diner, Gun Freedom Radio host Cheryl Todd, John Petrolino of The Pen Patriot and investigative journalist Lee Williams.
The conference brings together activists and experts each year to discuss court cases, legislation, federal policy and emerging battles over firearm ownership.
For Pearson, the Dallas ceremony capped decades spent fighting for Second Amendment rights.
But the award was hardly a closing chapter. Pearson made clear he still intends to be in the middle of the battles ahead.
