NEW JERSEY – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie plans to issue a statement this afternoon that he is suspending his presidential campaign, several media sources are reporting.
The Christie camp made a decision early on in the campaign to hinge its bets on a strong showing in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary, hoping that his “tell it like it is” style and record as governor of a blue state would resonate with voters.
But Christie came in behind Donald Trump, John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush in Tuesday's primary. After the polls closed, he went home to New Jersey to re-evaluate the race, and appears to have decided to drop out.
Delegates' names will appear on the Illinois March 15th GOP primary ballot for Christie, as will some for Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, who have already dropped out of the 2016 race.
