SPRINGFIELD – The idea that it really doesn't matter who is a state's attorney general could be in question, as Illinois' chief law enforcer isn't interested in protecting one of Illinois' most valuable resources – the coal industry.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan – the daughter of Illinois' longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan – sides with radical environmentalists more than coal miners. Illinois News Network reports:
Illinois could soon be the third-largest coal producer in the nation, but the state isn’t among a dozen or so states suing to prevent a federal regulation that would essentially force the mines to close.
Stream protection rules from the Obama administration make it much more difficult to run a mine.
Phil Gonet with the Illinois Coal Association said there’s a simple explanation why Illinois isn’t one of the states suing to keep their mines open.
“The Illinois Attorney General is the state’s lawyer,” he said. “And she’s on the other side of this issue. That’s the main reason why Illinois isn’t in that lawsuit.”
The Attorney General’s office didn’t offer an explanation as to why she’s not joining the other coal states.
