SPRINGFIELD – Taxpayers unhappy with Democrats who've signed onto a bill making every school, church and medical facility in the state of Illinois a "Safe Zone" for illegal aliens are planning a rally at the State Capitol Saturday, February 25.

Event organizers at Illinois' Minutemen Project are inviting like-minded folks to join them at the Capitol at noon to voice opposition to HB 426, a bill that passed a House committee last Wednesday.

Simply implementing the measure could cost taxpayers over $5 million annually, representatives from the state's Department of Human Services told lawmakers in committee last week. That would be the bare minimum each year to train personnel in schools, churches and medical facilities on how to handle situations when illegal aliens seek sanctuary.

Christine Chalkey, an advocate for Illinois' developmentally disabled, says Illinois' ongoing financial crisis is not the right time to increase state expenditures for programs like those in HB 426.

"The state is attempting to cut funding for mandated, medically necessary, life-sustaining services and care for US Citizens, children and adults living with profound physical and cognitive Developmental Disabilities in Illinois," Chalkey said. "Yet, while making cuts to the weakest citizens, Illinois legislators are extending and expanding funding for non-citizens."

Chalkey, as well as State Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake), will be speaking at the rally on February 25.

So far, those sponsoring and co-sponsoring HB 426 are all Democrats: Rep. Emanuel Chris WelchKathleen WillisElizabeth HernandezTheresa MahRobyn Gabel, Ann M. Williams, Gregory Harris, Thaddeus Jones, Silvana Tabares, Kelly M. Cassidy, Michael J. Zalewski, Laura Fine, Litesa E. Wallace, Christian L. Mitchell, Rita Mayfield, Lawrence Walsh, Jr., Will Guzzardi and Luis Arroyo.

More information on rally can be found at Illinois Minutemen Project's Facebook Page.

  1. The Left wants to make schools into “safe zones” for illegal immigrants, who may have crime records and carry diseases.
But schools are no longer allowed to be voting locations, for fear of the same problems?
Only the Democrats could be this hypocritical.

  2. A loss of $5 million to implement this nonsense.
Please take a look at the larger picture. This silliness effectively makes Illinois a “sanctuary state.”
Chicago, itself stands to lose a little over $26 billion in federal funds a year, if it maintains its “sanctuary” status.
What will be the cost to “sanctuary” Illinois? $70 billion?
Illinois is on the verge of having its government bonds declared as “junk bonds.”
What’s the next step below that? – super trash bonds?
The only upside of this is that Illinois will not be able to pay the wildly bloated pensions that the pols promised to state government employees.
Nor will Chicago and “sanctuary” Cook County be able to pay off their pension promises — nor will the CPS or any of the Cook County public school districts.
Oh, what silly webs these leftists have weave!

  3. Article one, Section nine of the U.S. Constitution granted the power over immigration to congress in 1808:
“The Migration (Immigration) or Importation (slaves) of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.”
It’s clear as glass that the federal gov’t was granted the authority to make immigration laws and the rules that must followed. Every one of those state representatives sponsoring HB 426 should be removed from office for advocating violating lawfully enacted federal law by advocating aiding & abetting lawbreakers. They swore an oath to uphold the constitution; they obviously lack integrity and have no respect for the rule of law. For most of Illinois citizens, respecting rule of law is who we are.
Article VI, Para 2… the SUPREMACY clause
“This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”
The federal govt has the authority to make immigration laws, the states do not! The banana republic dictators who are sponsors of HB 426 betray America. I see that at least one of the sponsors of HB 426 is an attorney, that rep in my opinion should be disbarred.

  4. They all need their heads examined. They don’t represent the voters any more, they are only interested in their own power and ability to spend OTHER PEOPLES MONEY” Stop now, we have crime all over Illinois and now you are going to protect them?
You are all crazy and it had better be voted down.
People are leaving Illinois in droves, pretty soon you will have a state of welfare recipients and criminals.
    Then will you be happy?

  5. If Madigan tells his Democrat lemmings to put ice cubes in their shorts, I will guarantee you that these guys will put blocks of ice in their underwear because they know that “bucking the whims of Mike Madigan” is tantamount to ending any chance of having a future Illinois political career. That “is a given”.

  6. TU Illinois Review for being the FIRST IL Media to report on this very important Rally for YOU, IL Voters and US Citizens first. We are gathering to stop HB 426 calling on IL Legislators to say “NO” to Making IL a Sanctuary state. We are also asking Gov. Rauner to make a commitment to Veto it. IL is in financial crisis and a two-year budget impasse. How can ANY IL Legislator justify extending and expanding scarce IL funding to non- citizens, here illegally, when IL is making cuts to its own; especially the most vulnerable citizens, children and adults with profound physical and Developmental Disabilities. Currently IL has 18, 971 Developmentally Disabled sitting on a state list waiting to get decreed state funding. About 11, 466 are classified as in CRITICAL, needing housing, food, shelter and medical care. Additional 1,787 are classified in an EMERGENCY situation and at great risk and even death. Sadly, 1,603 have DIED while desperately waiting for the mandated and PROMISED state help. To date 952 were forced to flee IL because IL was not providing them the court ordered funding. Ironically, vulnerable citizens are being forced to become aliens and refugees in their own country.
