CHICAGO – Luis Gutierrez doubled down his defense of "Dreamers" Friday, saying “If there is no pathway forward [for Dreamers] … then there is no government for anyone,” the Illinois congressman said Friday, speaking through tears. “We will shut it down.”
Gutierrez continues the ranting he started earlier this week. Not one Illinois Democrat has publicly criticized Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-04) for his insulting comments towards President Donald Trump's chief of staff General John Kelly made earlier this week. Gutierrez blamed General Kelly for the president's decision to end Barack Obama's executive order setting the DACA program into place.
"General Kelly is a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear," Gutierrez angrily vented this week after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the president's decision Tuesday. Kelly "has no honor and should be drummed out of the White House along with the white supremacists and those enabling the President’s actions by ‘just following orders,’" the Illinois congressman said.
“Immigrant youth, immigrant families, and our allies in all sectors of American life are here to stay, regardless of the President’s mass deportation fantasies and objectives," Gutierrez continued. "Americans will not let this President dictate the fate of the immigrants who have placed so much trust in their country.
"We have stood at airports to resist the Muslim Ban, marched with women to protect their rights, denounced racist and homophobic violence, and fought to defend Planned Parenthood and now young immigrants need everyone’s help," he said.
State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) heard enough from Gutierrez and spoke out in defense of General Kelly on her Facebook page, calling Democrats to denounce Gutierrez.
"lllinois Democrats – you need to denounce this idiot immediately! How dare he attack a man of substance and character who has served America in uniform," Ives, a West Point graduate, said. "Gutierrez lives a privileged life because of Americans like General Kelly. He hasn't solved one problem in Illinois from gang violence to jobs for minorities.
"How much longer will your party protect a creep like him? He, who never served in uniform, has no idea how the US military is truly the melting pot of society where a common mission, environment, and standards apply to all.
"The racist is Gutierrez, not General Kelly," Ives wrote, saying she'd watch for Democrats to respond.
Gutierrez doubled down Friday, saying, “If there is no pathway forward [for Dreamers] … then there is no government for anyone,” Gutierrez said, speaking through tears. “We will shut it down.”
Gutierrez statement as posted on his website said:
“I personally will not support any funding bill that does not include a safe harbor for DREAMers – and I will work to have others join me in opposition. If they need our votes, we are bringing 800,000 young immigrants with us.
“I have already spoken with Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and will be talking to other Democrats in the House, but if Republicans need our votes, we need to have legislation to protect immigrant youth who have DACA.
“As a movement, we will not go away, back down or give up because the President has taken this callous and destructive action. The CHC, other Democrats, and the pro-immigrant movement fought hard against a Democratic President to win DACA and I am confident my CHC and Democratic colleagues will fight a Republican President even harder to defend DACA, in the courts, through legislation, and community by community and deportation by deportation, if necessary.
“Immigrant youth, immigrant families, and our allies in all sectors of American life are here to stay, regardless of the President’s mass deportation fantasies and objectives. Americans will not let this President dictate the fate of the immigrants who have placed so much trust in their country. We have stood at airports to resist the Muslim Ban, marched with women to protect their rights, denounced racist and homophobic violence, and fought to defend Planned Parenthood and now young immigrants need everyone’s help. I watched families line up by the tens of thousands at Navy Pier in Chicago in August 2012 just for the opportunity for one or two of their children to achieve safety and security in America. I am not prepared to give up on them and will not.
“America is a better country than its President and most Americans do not want to see documented immigrants converted into undocumented immigrants. It just takes the country in the wrong direction and will be devastating to individual immigrants and families. The disruption, chaos and fear that this action precipitates will also strain state and local governments, educators, and employers. DACA is a program that has been a smashing success, yet the President, purely out of spite and incompetence is smashing DACA.
“General Kelly, when he was the head of Homeland Security, lied straight to the faces of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about preventing the mass deportation of DREAMers. Now as Chief of Staff, this former general is executing the plan to take away their lifeline and taking steps to criminalize young people who live and work here legally. General Kelly is a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear. He has no honor and should be drummed out of the White House along with the white supremacists and those enabling the President’s actions by ‘just following orders.’
“This Administration is on a very dangerous trajectory towards the full-throated endorsement of white supremacy—the likes of which we haven’t seen in the open from a sitting President for a century. President Trump followed up his weak and insincere response to racist violence in Charlottesville by pardoning notorious convicted racist Joe Arpaio and condoning Arpaio’s abuse of official power in defiance of federal law and court orders. Trump praises those who marched at the University of Virginia with torches shouting ‘Jews will not replace us,’ and launched his campaign for the White House by saying Mexican immigrants are rapists and murderers. But this action on DACA to pull the rug out from under almost 800,000 documented immigrants who have lived here for at least ten years and cast them back into the shadows is the ugliest act of appeasement for the far-right’s white-supremacist goals of them all, so far.”
Rep. Gutiérrez is in his 13th term representing the Fourth District of Illinois. He is a Member of the Judiciary Committee and is the Chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Rep. Gutiérrez introduced the American Hope Act (HR 3591) in July 2016 to provide legal status for immigrant youth, a bill that now has 139 co-sponsors in the House. (press release: http://bit.ly/2h9vFkn)
He is the lead Democratic sponsor of the bipartisan BRIDGE Act (HR 496, Bar Removal of Individuals who Dream and Grow our Economy), introduced with Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) in January 2017, which now has 25 co-sponsors. It would extend the protections of DACA for three years to give Congress an opportunity to enact permanent legislation. He is one of the most outspoken proponents of DACA and opponents of President Trump in Congress and was arrested as part of an act of civil disobedience at the White House at a pro-immigrant rally on August 15.
Hey Luis, the new DACA program
This elected representative also called for extra-legal mob action in the streets in response to the DACA executive rescinding order.
That comes perilously close to treason.
Thank you State Rep. Jeanne Ives
Luis, you are a hate-mongering idiot.
If not for gerrymandering to create your Congressional district, we wouldn’t even have to put up with you.
Lets deport that idiot “Chavez’ Bolshevik dictator enough with these crazed violent murdering assholes.
I can spot a Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Un and Chavez. Any independent voter can spot a megalomaniac nutjob; what’s wrong with Democrat voters thinking.
We know democraps aways want to reward law breakers, your big mouth intimidates no luie the lip. We are a country of laws, allot of good moral people are really fed up with liberal judgmentalism, liberal self-righteousness, and liberal name-calling. There are immigrant wannabes who have worked, and waited patiently, to come to America LEGALLY, and there are many still waiting. Why should we grant citizenship to those who are here illegally, especially since many of them are on welfare, and taxpayers are paying billions of dollars for them to be here? Nope… the FAIR thing to do is send them back to their home countries and insist that they obey our immigration and naturalization laws to become AMERICAN citizens, only IF they learn English, properly assimilate, and CONTRIBUTE in every way that matters. We want LAW abiding immigrants.
Congress has total power over immigration (Art. I, Sec. 9, clause 1) and naturalization (Art. I, sec. 8, clause 4), Obama unlawfully and unilaterally created DACA. It is Trump’s duty to undo Obama’s unlawful E.O.
Luis has also profited handsomely from real estate speculating while in elected office (he must be a soul mate with Elizabeth Warren). Most notably, he developed one property which his friends at the Cook County Assessor’s Office continued to assess for tax purposes as “a vacant lot.” Luis was able to pennies as opposed to dollars in real estate taxes/
I once (i.e 1x) dated the head of the IVI-IPO who had just run against Little Luis as an independent. She was an insufferable leftist – but would have been a veritable Thomas Jefferson compared to this cheap demagogue.
He is one of the only – if not the only – Puerto Rican in Congress. And if he had an ounce of goodwill and decency, he would be organizing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Irma down there.
But no! – in Gutierrez’s sick little world – immigration demagoguery and local leftist political opportunism trumps basic human decency.
