Washington, D.C. — Representative Peter Roskam (IL-06) yesterday voted ‘no’ on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. Regarding his vote on the bill, Rep. Roskam released the following statement:
“Yesterday, I cast a ‘no’ vote on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. While a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I opposed this legislation because it would allow out of state individuals with no license, no permit and no training to carry a concealed weapon in Illinois. By mandating federal concealed carry reciprocity, H.R. 38 would force Illinois to permit visitors from states with incredibly lax or nonexistent concealed carry licensing requirements to legally carry in our communities.
“Though I did not vote in favor of H.R. 38, which included provisions to strengthen the background check system, I am a cosponsor of H.R. 4434, the Fix NICS Act, and I strongly support bipartisan efforts to improve our background check system to ensure that federal and state authorities accurately report relevant criminal history records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).”
