Rhoads: Stupid is as stupid does in Lyons

By Mark Rhoads Jones

In part because of an extremely weak GOP organization, 70-year-old Lyons resident Arthur Jones has no opponent on the GOP Primary Ballot for the 3rd Congressional District.

He denies there is any proof that the Holocaust ever happened in Nazi Germany.

The district is now represented by moderate to conservative Democrat Dan Lipinski and leans hard to Democratic voters who gave Donald Trump only 40 percent of the vote in 2016 to 55 percent for Hillary Clinton. Lipinski himself has won over 70 percent of the vote in recent elections.

So Jones has zero chance to win even if he were a normal candidate.  But his odious views on the Holocaust only serve to further tarnish the GOP brand name in Cook County. If Jones stays on the ballot as the GOP nominee for the fall, GOP officials at all levels must actively attack his views if they want any credibility with decent Americans in future years.

  1. The Illinois State Central Committeeman for the 3rd Congressional District is Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison (who also serves as the Cook County Republican Chairman and Palos Township Committeeman). As county chairman Morrison has advocated that Republicans do not bother to file candidates in election districts unless those positions are considered winnable.
This type of embarrassment is exactly what happens when Republicans do not recruit candidates and fill out complete ballot slates. It permits lunatics like Jones to step into the vacancies. It allows incumbents like Preckwinkle and the scandal plagued Berrios be unopposed in the general election.

  2. I agree that a good county party chairman should try to slate as many candidates as possible. No Republicans are running for the state senate in these districts: 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 39, and 42. No Republicans are running in these state house districts: 1-14, 21-34, 36, and 38-40. No Republican is running for Cook Co. clerk, treasurer, sheriff, and assessor. These Chicago wards have no republican ward committeemen: 3, 7, 9, 10, 13, 18-24, 29, 30, 36, 37, and 45. If you know anyone, who wants to run in any of those legislative or county races, please ask them to ask Chairman Morrison to slate them, so that they can start collecting petition signatures as soon as possible. If you know anyone who wants to be a ward committeeman, please ask them to contact Chairman Morrison, since he can appoint them.
